If you’ve been told that it’s time for you to get braces, it’s normal for you to feel some degree of anxiety in response — especially as an adult.

We often associate braces treatments with childhood, even though one in four orthodontic patients is an adult. In fact, if you didn’t receive braces as a child, you may actually be more likely to need them now that your teeth have matured freely without treatment.

If you’re hesitating about the look or the experience of traditional metal braces, Invisalign braces are a great alternative. If you’re not familiar with Invisalign braces, you may not know exactly how they work. Let’s delve into some of the questions surrounding these traditional braces alternatives.

HOW DO INVISALIGN BRACES WORK?

The truth is that Invisalign braces work very similarly to the way traditional metal braces work. But in this case, Invisalign clear aligners are computer-generated to address your teeth’s specific needs. Rather than using wires, these invisible aligners utilize a series of molds that slowly push your teeth into the desired positions.

Essentially, these clear braces are just as effective as — if not more effective than — traditional braces in reaching the goal of straighter, realigned teeth. Usually, Invisalign patients will wear their trays for six to 18 months, whereas traditional braces are worn for one to three years. The treatment length depends on your specific treatment needs and how well you follow your orthodontist’s instructions, but the treatment period is typically shorter than that of traditional metal braces.

Also unlike traditional braces, Invisalign can be removed as needed. While the aligners need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, you can and should take them out while eating.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INVISALIGN BRACES?

Aside from being removable and having generally shorter treatment timelines, invisible aligners are a more subtle alternative to traditional braces. This can alleviate any self-consciousness people may feel while wearing orthodontic treatment, which is particularly appealing for teens and adults. Invisible aligners can also be more comfortable than traditional braces, as they do not contain sharp metal pieces. In fact, many patients say that adjusting to a new set of aligners is less painful than dealing with braces adjustments. Additionally, it’s easier to stop using Invisalign aligners when the time comes, whereas traditional metal braces can only be removed by an orthodontist.
